A multiage program enables children to remain in a family grouping for two to three years with the same teacher. Classrooms include children with a two to four year age span. Grade placements may include children normally in first and second grade, or three grades in third, fourth, and fifth grade. Each year approximately seven new children enter the classroom as approximately seven leave.
This grouping system has several features that appeal to parents and teachers
Children progress at their own rate without the restrictions of a grade level
Children remain in a highly stable environment for two to three years. Teachers know the children and parents are familiar with the teacher and routines.
Very little instructional time is taken in establishing routines or reviewing at beginning of the school year.
Younger children receive mentorship, encouragement, and modeling from older students. Older students have the opportunity to support younger students and reinforce their own learning.
Curriculum is the same curriculum used throughout the district. Multiage teacher approach the task of curriculum delivery through thematic, integrated learning. The multiage structure provides opportunities for children to work together across age and ability groupings. Smaller groups are formed to support children at their level of development in math and reading and to provide additional instruction when needed.
Each teacher continuously assesses children's learning through observation, writing samples, conferencing, and portfolios. Multiage children take the same formal tests as other children in the district. The multiage program has adequately prepared children for standardized tests.
Program monitoring and planning is conducted by a steering committee composed of parents, central office, staff, teachers, and the building principal.
Farrand's Multiage program is a voluntary program, open to anyone in the district. Outside of Farrand's attendance area, parents need to provide transportation. Each year parents make the decision about enrolling their child or changing back to single age classrooms.
